Secunia Personal Software Inspector
Secunia, one of the largest security companies, has released a new version (ver. 0.1.0.2) of its Personal Software Inspector (PSI) that fixes installation problems on Windows Vista. Although with the first release coming out in the end of July 2007 and still being in beta stage, PSI detects almost 8000 applications and categorises them as either Insecure, End-of-Life, or Up-To-Date, thus helping a user to keep an eye on the existing software vulnerabilities and be able to download updates for them.
PSI also calculates Secunia score, which is advised to be at 100% all the time and is a cumulative score based on the number of total software installations and a number of programs flagged as Insecure or End-of-Life.
PSI is a good choice of keeping an eye on the updates in one place instead of running update agents for every other program out there – PSI uses less than 15Mb of active RAM when running on Windows XP and provides direct download links for every program flagged as Insecure (i.e. requiring security updates) or End-Of-Life.
Highlights of Secunia PSI include:
- The Secunia PSI will be available free of charge
- Calculates your unique Secunia System Score
- Automatically scans your computer
- Enables you to update Insecure/End-of-Life software
- Provides Direct Download Links to security updates & patches
- Direct correlation between thousands of Secunia Advisories and your specific system and software
- Secure SSL encrypted connection to Secunia
